The fraction-to-decimal formula
The formula is simple: decimal = numerator ÷ denominator. The numerator tells you how many parts you have, while the denominator tells you how many equal parts make one whole.
Example 1: Convert 3/4 to a decimal
- Identify the numerator: 3.
- Identify the denominator: 4.
- Divide 3 by 4.
- The result is 0.75.
Example 2: Convert 1/2 to a decimal
Divide 1 by 2. The result is 0.5, so 1/2 = 0.5.
Example 3: Convert 7/4 to a decimal
Divide 7 by 4. The result is 1.75. Fractions with a numerator larger than the denominator can produce decimals greater than 1.
What about repeating decimals?
Some fractions produce repeating decimals. For example, 1 ÷ 3 is 0.333... The digits 3 continue indefinitely, so the decimal is often written using an ellipsis.
How do you convert a mixed fraction?
First, multiply the whole-number part by the denominator. Add the numerator to that result, then divide by the denominator. For example, 1 3/4 becomes (1 × 4 + 3) ÷ 4 = 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75.
